Aziz Quartet (Study)
Gouache on Graph Paper, 20 x 30 ins. 1990.
Bryan Charnley produced a great many non-representational works and was particularly busy during 1990 and 1991, the last two years of his life. These featured are mainly on graph paper which he occasionally used to make studies for works on canvas. The influence of Bridget Riley, an artist he admired, is apparent in several paintings as are references to American Hard Edge abstraction. In these paintings he is searching for a harmony in line and colour while retaining a dynamic tension in the completed composition. The use of colour to achieve this end predominates throughout.
