A dramatic painting which displays a vigorous and competent handling of the medium. Bryan Charnley painted this, aged eighteen, in the summer before he left Bedford. By lighting the three low key household items with a strong sidelight he has created a still life theatre which is further augmented by a minimal palette and expressionistic brushwork.
