Untitled (Love)

Oil on Canvas, 28 x 40 ins. 1990.

This seems to be a self portrait but also an image of unrequited love. The foreground figure, heartbroken, blood falling from two wounds in his chest, is separated from the woman in the field beyond the river. The river with the sky and a skein of migrating birds reflected on its surface is impassable without a bridge. The windblown grass and trees in full leaf stand merely add to the sadness conveyed here.
