The Watchers
Oil on Canvas, 36 x 44 ins. 1990
This is a dark picture, loosely painted in the artist’s later style. In the sombre shadow world two figures wait on either side of a child’s’ bed. The child’s face is featureless, there is nothing there, but above this emptiness is a teardrop which will fall and fill the space. The watchers wait in attendance, knowing more than the child but seemingly unable to help him. The Robot on the right has a whole city in his head, a future city to be encountered. The hooded figure seems more menacing a horn protruding beneath the mask. They both wait at the bedside seeing the sleeping child through the night making sure they are there when the teardrop falls.
